Summary

This is the story of a house。

The cabin lies deep in the woods, where the trees are so dense it’s easy to miss。 On the outside it might look like it’s crumbling, crawling with weeds, but on the inside it’s warm and cosy。 A fire crackles in the fireplace。 Dinner simmers on the stove。

Maya once saw this cabin as an idyllic place, like a cottage from a fairy tale, but now she knows the danger that lurks beneath。 The summer she visited the cabin was the summer her best friend Aubrey died。

Now, another woman from Maya’s hometown has died in the same strange, unexplained way, and Maya believes only she can save the next innocent girl。

Guided by her fractured memory and a mysterious, unfinished book by her late father, Maya returns home to face the house in the pines and the man who waits there – the man she’s tried so hard to forget 。 。 。

The story is fast paced but then wimps out an ending。 It had me gripped throughout but then disappointedly flopped at the end…like she quit writing to wrap things up “tidily”。 I’d give it a 3。5。

I liked how the slow burn of this book filled me with a sense of dread throughout the whole thing and made the twist at the end shock me。 I didn’t love the book though, and I can’t figure out why, but overall this was a solid read, especially for a decently-long plane ride。 I wouldn’t read it again though。

Wow wow wow what a story this one was。The whole thing weaves it's way around you and I felt like I didn't know where it was going or who I could trust。 It was a slower burn book but full of mystery and a sense of unease。 The ending had my heart racing and the moment the puzzle pieces of the truth fell together, it all just made sense。The only criticism I have of this book was that the chapters jump between past and present however are unlabelled as "past" or "present"。 To better distinguish thin Wow wow wow what a story this one was。The whole thing weaves it's way around you and I felt like I didn't know where it was going or who I could trust。 It was a slower burn book but full of mystery and a sense of unease。 The ending had my heart racing and the moment the puzzle pieces of the truth fell together, it all just made sense。The only criticism I have of this book was that the chapters jump between past and present however are unlabelled as "past" or "present"。 To better distinguish things, that addition would have been good。 However the story is told in a way that you do quickly figure out which timeline you're currently reading and there was only really one section I misread as present when it was past。Thank you so much to Netgalley, Hatchette and Ana Reyes for my ebook ARC of this book and a special mention to Hatchette Australia for my physical copy of this book。 。。。more

It starts slow, and sometimes the flashbacks got a bit confusing between the present and the past, but the entire story was beautifully haunting。 I love how it connected back to the story of her father, and then intersected with her present day hazy memories。The twist SHOCKED ME。 I noticed it a bit before the revelation was made but it definitely made the book so much more haunting and memorable。 There’s a few things that could be better but overall this would be an incredible tv mini-series and It starts slow, and sometimes the flashbacks got a bit confusing between the present and the past, but the entire story was beautifully haunting。 I love how it connected back to the story of her father, and then intersected with her present day hazy memories。The twist SHOCKED ME。 I noticed it a bit before the revelation was made but it definitely made the book so much more haunting and memorable。 There’s a few things that could be better but overall this would be an incredible tv mini-series and I appreciated the Guatemalan culture as well。 。。。more

This book was an easy read and kept my interest。 The ending wasn’t as dramatic as I had anticipated。

Thank you so much for the ARC! I'm mad at the ending。。。 The whole book I was crafting in my mind how these deaths happened, and then the ending came and the explanation was。。。 dull, and usatisfying。 Additionally,I went into this thinking it was a thriller but the pacing of the book is too slow to be considered a thiller。 And the last two chapters felt rushed, and too much information was Sheared to make us believe the ending was good and it totally made sense。I gave it 2 🌟 because the plot and first half of the book were pret I'm mad at the ending。。。 The whole book I was crafting in my mind how these deaths happened, and then the ending came and the explanation was。。。 dull, and usatisfying。 Additionally,I went into this thinking it was a thriller but the pacing of the book is too slow to be considered a thiller。 And the last two chapters felt rushed, and too much information was Sheared to make us believe the ending was good and it totally made sense。I gave it 2 🌟 because the plot and first half of the book were pretty interesting and fun, which made the ending more infuriating。 。。。more

Started a little slow for me, but kept me trying to figure out what was happening。 Psychological, magical, thrilling, terrifying。 Couldn’t put it down; had to use an audible credit to listen while running errands so I could ”put it down”。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 More of a young adult thriller and not so scary (thankfully)。 Enjoyed the characters and how the chapters were structured in a Stephen King style moving between stories。 I half expected it to all be in her mind and whilst in the end I was pleased it wasn't I find myself wondered how it would have ended if it was all drug fuelled hallucinations and psychosis。 But I guess that's another story。 Great debut。 More of a young adult thriller and not so scary (thankfully)。 Enjoyed the characters and how the chapters were structured in a Stephen King style moving between stories。 I half expected it to all be in her mind and whilst in the end I was pleased it wasn't I find myself wondered how it would have ended if it was all drug fuelled hallucinations and psychosis。 But I guess that's another story。 Great debut。 。。。more

This was okay, I just feel like it was missing a lot of depth。 Easy and short read just not much to it。 The ending seemed sudden and I was surprised it was over when it was。 Could have definitely helped to have past/present labels on every chapter since it switched with no warning constantly。

Thank you to libro。fm for providing me with an ALC of this audiobook。 AGH。 I read the summary for this and was really intrigued, but it simply fell apart the more I listened。 The two timelines in this story made it more complicated than it needed to be, and I found myself really bored。 I just didn't care about any thing happening in this story。 Hard pass。 Thank you to libro。fm for providing me with an ALC of this audiobook。 AGH。 I read the summary for this and was really intrigued, but it simply fell apart the more I listened。 The two timelines in this story made it more complicated than it needed to be, and I found myself really bored。 I just didn't care about any thing happening in this story。 Hard pass。 。。。more

The book blurb sets this title as a thriller mystery, but the pacing and focus is really about Maya coping with trauma and its impact on her life。 Slow pacing with innumerable flashbacks, combined with Maya’s unreliable narration, form disjointed scenes。 While this fits with Maya’s life, it’s not always a fun ride as a reader。 Attempts at magical realism flounder, mostly because this is a mystery and one that is easily solved within the first few chapters。 The audiobook narration is clear, altho The book blurb sets this title as a thriller mystery, but the pacing and focus is really about Maya coping with trauma and its impact on her life。 Slow pacing with innumerable flashbacks, combined with Maya’s unreliable narration, form disjointed scenes。 While this fits with Maya’s life, it’s not always a fun ride as a reader。 Attempts at magical realism flounder, mostly because this is a mystery and one that is easily solved within the first few chapters。 The audiobook narration is clear, although production could have defined spacing better between flashbacks。 Not recommended。 。。。more

Like Maya you feel as if you are going a little bit off your rocker as you read this but the puzzle pieces come together nicely in the end。 It’s definitely a psychological thriller but a bit different than what I was expecting and have read before。

This book was just okay for me, if a little strange。 A lot of back and forth in time with no real heads up。 More of a character study than a thriller。 But the prose was delicate and endearing。 The storyline was very unique, I doubt I've ever read anything quite like it。 This book was just okay for me, if a little strange。 A lot of back and forth in time with no real heads up。 More of a character study than a thriller。 But the prose was delicate and endearing。 The storyline was very unique, I doubt I've ever read anything quite like it。 。。。more

This is a really solid debut for the author! The story felt super unique for me and was very unexpected。 For the majority of the book, I didn't even have a working theory going。。。I literally had no idea where it was going to go, which was really fun! The book had such a creepy, sinister vibe, with a totally creepy ex-boyfriend and some mysterious, unexplained deaths。 We also have an unreliable MC who is going through Klonopin withdrawal--she's not sleeping and feels like she can't even trust her This is a really solid debut for the author! The story felt super unique for me and was very unexpected。 For the majority of the book, I didn't even have a working theory going。。。I literally had no idea where it was going to go, which was really fun! The storyline was unique。 It had so much potential, but there was too much going on in too few pages for it to be properly tapped。 My favourite portions of the book were those about Guatemala and Guatemalan culture。 The pages of the book that centered around Maya’s father, the Guatemalan Civil War, Guatemalan genocide, and the book he was writing are what grabbed my attention。 In the end, I was turning the pages for that content and had an AH-HA moment when I realized that the main character was The storyline was unique。 It had so much potential, but there was too much going on in too few pages for it to be properly tapped。 My favourite portions of the book were those about Guatemala and Guatemalan culture。 The pages of the book that centered around Maya’s father, the Guatemalan Civil War, Guatemalan genocide, and the book he was writing are what grabbed my attention。 In the end, I was turning the pages for that content and had an AH-HA moment when I realized that the main character was likely named as a dedication/nod to the Maya people。 With the story unfolding in rotating timelines, there was no indication when we were time travelling, and blame it on the jet lag but it took me a few paragraphs to sort out what time we were in at the beginning of each new chapter。 It felt all over the place, and that we were dipping our toes rather than fully wading in。 Let's just say, I wasn’t thrilled。 。。。more

The premise of this storyline is fascinating-but at the same time hard to fathom。 Maya’s best friend dies suddenly when they were in high school, as she was talking to Maya’s boyfriend。 No cause of death is determined。 Maya’s life is never the same。 Years later she sees a video of her ex and the feelings come flooding back。 Maya’s disastrous dinner at Dan’s parents house made her seem so real, but the extent of her addiction and the fact that she hid it from others so successfully was chilling。T The premise of this storyline is fascinating-but at the same time hard to fathom。 Maya’s best friend dies suddenly when they were in high school, as she was talking to Maya’s boyfriend。 No cause of death is determined。 Maya’s life is never the same。 Years later she sees a video of her ex and the feelings come flooding back。 Maya’s disastrous dinner at Dan’s parents house made her seem so real, but the extent of her addiction and the fact that she hid it from others so successfully was chilling。The book was entertaining but the resolution was too far fetched for me。 I did enjoy the snippets of Guatemalan culture scattered throughout the book。 Many thanks to Ana Reyes for creating Maya, who seemed to come alive within these pages, to Dutton for realizing the potential of this storyline, and NetGalley for affording me the opportunity to read an arc of this just published book。 Please keep writing Ana Reyes! 。。。more

Quite the twisty tale, And a little confusing as an audiobook with the jumping back-and-forth in time, but that also correlates to some of the memory issues of the character。 Overall a binge worthy read。

The House in the Pines by Ana ReyesRating (3/5) ⭐️⭐️⭐️The House in the Pines was overall a fairly good debut novel。 Im a little bummed because I was so excited to read this as it’s synopsis really sparked my interest。 I felt a lack of connection to the characters; & felt that some parts dragged on。 The only reason for the rating being 3 stars and not 2 stars was because I really enjoyed the ending。

Thank you to libro。fm for providing me with an ALC of this audiobook。 All opinions are my own。I was initially intrigued by the premise of the story, and felt like there was so much potential to this story。 We have a biracial woman who is going through benzodiazepine withdrawal and facing unresolved issues from the past that have been resurrected。 Maya has never quite come to terms with the suspicious death of her best friend Aubrey while they were in high school, and blames a man she was dating Thank you to libro。fm for providing me with an ALC of this audiobook。 All opinions are my own。I was initially intrigued by the premise of the story, and felt like there was so much potential to this story。 We have a biracial woman who is going through benzodiazepine withdrawal and facing unresolved issues from the past that have been resurrected。 Maya has never quite come to terms with the suspicious death of her best friend Aubrey while they were in high school, and blames a man she was dating named Frank, despite the fact that he never laid a hand on her。 While she's been working hard to move on, seven years later she comes across a video of a woman sitting across from Frank in a restaurant, and the woman suddenly drops dead。 Maya becomes convinced that Frank is to blame。Maya is the epitome of an unreliable narrator, making it difficult to take what she says at face value。 She spends much of her time drinking, adding even more unreliability to her narration。 The story is a bit convoluted by the insertion of flashbacks to Maya's high school years, her relationship with Frank and her friendship with Aubrey。 It's clear that something fishy was going on, but back then, Maya was smoking marijuana and that made it difficult to trust what she was saying。 The story feels a bit disjointed and choppy, but I wanted to know what happened。 I did love the way that Maya's Guatemalan heritage is given an important role in the story, despite the fact that her father passed away before she was born。 Her mother made a point of connecting Maya to the other side of her heritage, and keeping her in contact with her family members, teaching her about the culture and history of her father's people。 I even learned more about this history of Guatemala, some things I never knew about, and it was really interesting。 Overall, the big reveal at the end was somewhat anticlimactic, but I did enjoy a good portion of the story。 。。。more
